February 29, 2024, is what's known as a leap day. Leap days occur approximately every four years, with some exceptions, to synchronize the calendar year with the solar year.

Solar Year vs. Calendar Year: The solar year, or tropical year, is the time it takes for the Earth to complete one orbit around the sun, roughly 365.24 days. However, the standard calendar year consists of 365 days. This means that over time, if we didn't adjust the calendar, the calendar year would gradually drift out of sync with the seasons.

Leap Year: To correct this misalignment, we add an extra day to the calendar approximately every four years. This extra day is added to the month of February, making it 29 days long instead of the usual 28. This additional day is known as a leap day.
